NEWINGTON - The modern version of the Salvation Army "Donut Girl” is today’s "Health Food Lady." "No more donuts… only healthy food," says Envoy Pat Wood, Hartford Citadel Associate Corps Officer, who has been visiting the Newington Veterans Hospital for over seven years. Envoy Pat and her army of volunteers come here twice a month, every month, and they serve over 200 vets every time they are here.
"I have so many wonderful memories… I think one of the fondest memories I have was a WWII vet who was in tears as he told us of how he came wounded, cold, and frightened to The Salvation Army workers, asking them how much for a cup of coffee. He said 'This angel from The Salvation Army poured me a free hot cup of coffee, tended to my wounds, wrapped me in a blanket, and asked if she could pray for me.' He remembers an overwhelming feeling of love and peace coming over him. He said she sat with him while another Salvationist went to get someone from the Red Cross to better assist him with his wounds. He said he will never ever forget the unselfish service of The Salvation Army and will never go by a Salvation Army Red Kettle without putting in a donation. It is one of my greatest privileges to serve these men and women."
