Within the Greater Hartford area, The Salvation Army operates a variety of programs that seek to serve neighbors in need of all ages, including: Marshall House's Homeless Prevention and Shelter Diversion program, Family Shelter, Shelter and Navigation services for Youth, Winter Overflow Shelter, and Winter Warming Center, The Right Place early learning programs, Anti-Human Trafficking Bloom Initiative, Parents Second Time Around for grandparent caregivers, Emergency Material Assistance, Holiday Meals for homebound seniors, Toy Distribution, Camp CONNRI, and more.

The Salvation Army’s Holiday Meals program has been providing nutritious meals to homebound seniors on Thanksgiving and Christmas for well over 30 years. Last Year, 2018, we were privileged to serve 698 Christmas meals and 699 Thanksgiving meals! As one senior told us, "I am so grateful for this program. Without it, I am not sure that I or other seniors like me would be able to afford a nice meal."

The mission of our Holiday Meals program again this year is to ensure that seniors, who are homebound, isolated or disabled, receive a nutritious meal and a friendly, warm visit on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is important, especially during the holidays, that people who are often isolated from family know that they are remembered and valued.

This gift goes beyond those receiving the meals and visits and is also bestowed on those delivering the meals. The volunteers and seniors have the opportunity to visit and share conversations with one another and experience the togetherness holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas should bring. Moreover, during these visits, the volunteers have the opportunity to find out if the seniors have any unmet needs with which The Salvation Army can assist.

We received hundreds of requests from seniors for this year's Holiday Meals program and we plan on serving all that we can. The Salvation Army is the only agency in the Greater Hartford Area that delivers a holiday meal to seniors on these holidays every year and your support allows us to continue supporting those most in need in our community!

On Christmas day, another 700 meals will be delivered to seniors.
