MONTVILLE - The Salvation Army's New London Emergency Disaster Services Canteen 1 served yet again, this time at a large brush fire off Kittemaug Road in Montville on the afternoon of Monday, April 7. Crews from Montville; CT DEEP; surrounding towns; and CL&P all assisted in fighting the fire, which was located on top of a hill overlooking the Thames River. This task was made difficult by strong winds, dry vegetation, its location, and the high-voltage electrical transmission lines overhead.

The three-man volunteer crew from Canteen 1 provided hydration, lunch, snacks, and rehabilitation support to the over 45 crew members and our efforts were greatly appreciated by all those who were served. As we reflect on National Volunteer Week, The Salvation Army is grateful for all of our volunteers, including those who make our Emergency Disaster Services program possible. Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini remarked to The Day newspaper that fire crews were packing up shortly before 5 p.m. after first responding to the area at about 10:50 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though Occhialini said one homeowner witnessed a bird flying into the high tension power lines and "explode."
