Homebound Seniors Served by The Salvation Army in New London

NEW LONDON, CT – The Salvation Army in New London is delivering prepacked food boxes, which include breakfast, lunch and dinner, to homebound seniors in need in New London, Waterford and Groton. The food boxes, which contain meals that will last 3-5 days, are also being delivered to families with children without transportation. Some families in this service area are unable to get to education department locations serving free meals.

“We are finding some seniors also have disabilities, making it difficult to get to the grocery store,” said Captain Jose Borerro, Salvation Army New London Corps Officer. Some seniors are also cautious about going out to public locations, as the COVID-19 virus is hitting this population particularly hard. “It’s a big help,” said Miss Emma, a retired senior from New London. “They brought me a nice box of food that should last me a couple of weeks. I’m very happy.”

Deliveries will soon increase, thanks to local volunteers. New London Advisory Board member Matthew Teicholz, Program Chief Engineer of Military Development Programs at Pratt & Whitney, facilitated a partnership with Connecticut College. Volunteers will man 2 vans for deliveries to seniors and families with children. Volunteer Jose Davila said, “Doing this service has made me like I am making a difference in people’s lives during this pandemic.”
