With summer right around the corner, The Salvation Army's Camp CONNRI is gearing up to open its doors to future campers. The Congregational Church of South Glastonbury offers a volunteer program comprised of 32 volunteers, 7 of which came to lend a helping hand to Camp CONNRI on this day.

The volunteers made new and much-needed improvements to the sprawling 272-acre camp grounds. It's a massive help, which is always needed," said Camp CONNRI Assistant Director Katie Perrett.

Volunteers focused their efforts on improving landscaping around the camp's site, as well as planting an array of flower beds, mowing lawns, and even building a new goat pen for the summer. "We've needed a goat pen for a while. Now, we can finally work on it because of their help," said Perrett.

The volunteers from the Congregational Church of South Glastonbury strive to give back to the community as much as possible. They have dedicated an entire week of service to different nonprofit organizations throughout Connecticut. Later in the week, they helped out The Salvation Army's The Right Place, a School Readiness program for children ages 3 to 5 located in Hartford and The Salvation Army's Marshall House, a family shelter also located in Hartford.

At the Marshall House volunteers painted wooden railings, organized the children's books in the resource center and put together changing tables for mothers with infants.

At The Right Place, volunteers painted some of the classrooms. Giving the spaces a fresh coat of paint and making them a more vibrant learning environment for the children.

Not only do the three Salvation Army locations benefit from the Congregational Church of South Glastonbury's help, but so do the volunteers. "The sense of community is really what I get out of volunteering," said Congregational Church of South Glastonbury coordinator Bob Parente. "You get to know more about the people you go to church with. You begin to build bonds, share laughs and memories."
