Bristol Celebrates National Salvation Army Week

BRISTOL – Mayor Ken Cockayne joined a group of Salvation Army officials and supporters in front of City Hall on Monday May 11 to celebrate the 62nd National Salvation Army Week. The Mayor read a proclamation from the State of Connecticut honoring The Salvation Army for the work they do in the community and all across the state. He was joined by Advisory Board members, Corps members, and friends in a brief ceremony. The Salvation Army’s Blood & Fire Battle Flag was raised and flown in front of City Hall for the entire week.

This week is typically observed in the second week of May and was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 – 74 years after The Salvation Army arrived in the U.S.

In his speech, President Eisenhower noted,

"Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all."

Bristol Corps Officer, Captain Kathy Adams, said, “We're thankful for the opportunity to recognize the 3.5 million volunteers from Bristol and all across the United States who give their time and talents to The Salvation Army each year and help us "Do The Most Good" for those in need every year! Thank you to all of our amazing supporters!”
