Backus Hospital Hosts Safety Camp for Kids

NORWICH - Backus Hospital served as hosts for the 11th Annual Backus Safety Camp on Saturday, May 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot outside of the Medical Office Building entrance at 326 Washington Street. Organized by the Backus Trauma and EMS Departments and American Ambulance, Safety Camp gave children and their families an opportunity to learn about safety in a fun environment. Children were given free bicycle helmets while the supplies lasted and they also had the opportunity to tour emergency vehicles and learn how they worked.

Since the purpose of this annual Backus event is to teach kids about safety, basic safety lessons were taught, including water safety, electricity – do’s and don’ts, fire hazards, the use of 911, and more. Face painting was also available for the kids and proved to be very popular with the youngsters.

Salvation Army Norwich Corps Officer Captain Jerry Uttley said, “When the request came in from the hospital, asking us if we could participate in Safety Camp, of course we said yes! I checked with our Officers in New London about the status of the EDS canteen truck and with our headquarters in Hartford, and it was an automatic... go! The Hospital is always there for us and the community, so we were eager to serve at Safety Camp.”

Rich Wildman coordinated the volunteers with the help of Bob Heal (our number one volunteer in New London) and the Hospital. If you would like to become an EDS volunteer, including access to free trainings, click here to fill out this brief form and we will respond to you shortly.
