Camp CONNRI's First Military Kids Camp

Now Underway!

ASHFORD - Singing and waving the American flag culminated the first day of our Military Kids Camp at The Salvation Army’s beautiful Camp CONNRI on Monday, August 11. Captain Janet González, Veterans' Affairs Secretary, Captains Jon and Sienna Jackson, Camp Directors, and the rest of Camp CONNRI staff gave an enthusiastic welcome to the boys and girls in attendance. The children were all eagerly gathered around the campfire, having already made new friendships and warm camp memories since their arrival.

After a fun day of swimming, kayaking, rock climbing, archery, and more, kids got to know their cabin counselors better through a series of funny skits. They also received instructions for the week and enjoyed melting marshmallows for delicious S’mores. Each child in attendance then received an American flag for an informal flag ceremony that included appreciative words from Captain Jackson and singing “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Military Kids

The following day was just as enjoyable, with a little help from Connecticut’s Operation: Military Kids! Children had fun trying on actual army uniforms and engaging in some boot camp exercises. Campers also spent time making patriotic buttons and other creative crafts, while having fun on the low ropes course, more swimming, peddle bike races, and many other activities the camp has to offer. We look forward to having even more fun with the campers throughout the rest of the sessions!
